About the art work

Silence is a powerful colour woodcut print that transforms an everyday gesture into a dramatic visual statement through the bold, high-contrast aesthetic typical of the medium. The concept behind this artwork explores how silence functions as a significant narrative device in a noisy world, inviting deep contemplation. The work of art presents a subject with exaggerated features and wide, intense eyes, juxtaposed with a finger pressed firmly against the lips, the universal sign for quiet. This tension between the potential for loud expression (implied by the heightened emotion in the eyes and face) and the enforced restraint is central to the work’s meaning. The woodcut medium, with its strong lines and flat planes of vibrant colour, amplifies this drama, turning the act of “shushing” into a moment of powerful, silent command or perhaps suppressed speech.
